What is Mobile-Friendliness?
A large factor that plays into the SEO of your website is mobile-friendliness—the ability of your website to display properly and speedily on mobile devices, such as a phone or tablet.
To improve mobile-friendliness, please keep the five following recommendations in mind:
- Eliminate the need for users to scroll repeatedly on your homepage by moving important information to the top
- Include social links at the top of the page
- Include a menu tab at the top of the page
- Don’t display long video clips on your site’s homepage
- Ensure that images are properly optimized for mobile devices (smaller-resolution images are able to load more quickly)
Testing for Mobile-Friendliness
There are many online tools that can be used to evaluate the mobile-friendliness of your website. The top site we recommend using is Website Grader by Hubspot. This site tests different factors under the following categories: Performance, Mobile, SEO, and Security, and can provide you with specific instructions on what to do to strengthen under-performing categories.
Another site we recommend to use to test for mobile-friendliness is Test My Site by Google. This site primarily focuses on testing the speed of which your site will load on mobile devices, because “53% of visits are abandoned if a mobile site takes longer than 3 seconds to load” (Google Data, 2016). This test for speed is much more thorough than that of Website Grader.
As you can see below, the City of Albuquerque’s current site, www.cabq.gov, performs fairly well using this test. However, some recommendations are still made by Test My Site to increase mobile processing speed, including leverage caching and image optimization.
